Sassafras
An irregular, rounded tree, native to the eastern United States. It has horizontal branching and a tendency to sucker. The leaves vary in shape, but are typically mitten shaped. The spring flowers are yellow green and held on 2" racemes. The bark is a corky, deeply furrowed, red brown. Foliage colors in the fall to yellow, oranges and reds. It prefers full sun to part shade and an average, well-drained soil.
