An upright oval tree with hornbeam like foliage and fruit that resembles hops, also described as inflated pods. It is pest resistant and tolerant of drought and alkaline soils; intolerant of salt. It prefers full sun. The fall color is yellow. Native to the mid-west and eastern North America. It is also referred to as Leverwood and Ironwood.
