A rounded shrub with small yellow flowers in the early spring. The foliage is aromatic when crushed. Fall foliage color is yellow, the berries are a bright red. The berries are a food source for migratory birds. It takes sun to shade and prefers moist soils. In full shade the plant grows more open. Native to Texas to Maine in woods and pond shores.
